If you clicked on this post then I'm assuming you're a shopaholic who needs serious help. So, I'm here to help you! Scroll down to see my 6 tips on how to shop mindfully!
BEFORE WE BEGIN;
What is mindful shopping?
When we shop mindfully, we consider what we are buying, where it came from, why we are buying it, and the overall consequence of our choices. Instead of acting impulsively or without consideration for how an organization's supply chain is run ethically and sustainably, mindful shoppers make choices based on understanding of what is best for themselves, their communities, people, and the environment. Oversimplified, it means thinking twice before buying.
Why should we do it?
Dr. Dimitrios Tsivrikos' research at University College London has demonstrated that using physical money causes the brain more discomfort than using digital money. Effectively, it is simpler to spend electronically—whether through credit cards or online—than it was in the past to hand over cash in the form of notes and coins. Overspending can result in feelings of guilt, embarrassment, and financial worries. Being a conscientious shopper has several advantages, including time and money savings. You can avoid spending money and effort attempting to decide quickly on products you are unsure about by not making impulsive purchases when you are shopping. Because they only buy what they need, when they need it, mindful consumers have homes with little to no clutter. Because you have less things to worry about at home, this helps you live simply.
Now, without further ado, here is my guide to mindful shopping!
1. patience
We regret our purchases much too often when they are spontaneous or impulsive. Put the items you're about to purchase back on the rack and come back another day. Alternately, postpone placing your online buy until the following morning. Use the extra time to consider whether you truly do love the piece you are buying!
2. SHUT IT!
"I love shopping!"... Why? How? How has shopping become such a leisurely activity? The amount of people I have heard say this when I ask them "What's your hobby?" or "What do you love?" is seriously unbelievable. To be completely honest, I WAS one of those people. Underline the past-tense. But one day I decided to try and put a stop to my unhealthy shopping habits (you should try that too.) Absolutley BAN this phrase from your vocabulary and all similar phrases. Why? Law of attraction exists. If you say you LOVE shopping, you'll turn in to a shopaholic (if you aren't already)
3. Seasonal Cleaning
Go through your entire wardrobe. Clean it out entirely. Get a small notepad beside you and note what you might need. But don't just write anything! Only stuff you really need and will actually use. Do not write it down if it is repairable. Throw, donate, sell your clothes! This is also the perfect time to discover forgotten pieces and fall in love with them again! (I love when that happens! Especially since I already own the piece!) Do this the beginning of every season. Spring, summer, autumn, winter (just incase you forgot them 🤧)
4. Shopping Buddy!
Believe it or not, the people you shop with affect your shopping habits & what you buy as well! My best friend once told me she has a friend who was a serious impulsive shopper, whenever she went out with her, she would IMMEDIATELY tell her to buy it without thinking just to go to the next store, always repeating the phrase "YOLO." And then she proceeded to tell me I was the complete opposite, saying that, and I quote "You make me contemplate my life decisions over a lip gloss! But you seriously make me save so much money and really make me open up my mind, which is why I love shopping with you!" You really have to shop with somebody who is also a mindful shopper (but if they aren't, send them this post ;))
5. Avoid Temptations
This one is pretty straight-forward. And I know it's hard to do so when the Rare Beauty shelves at Sephora exist. But everything being sold out all the time does low key help! (please restock.) Delete the shopping apps on your phone, unfollow the brands on Instagram, Pinterest, TikTok, YouTube, EVERYWHERE. Unmark their websites, unsubscribe to their newsletters, DO NOT watch YouTube shopping hauls, avoid shopping malls, and also avoid online shopping at all costs! Un-save your credit card information, do anything just to not let your brain get tricked!
6. Love it!
For my last tip.. I won't attempt to steer you toward a particular purchase. Everyone is unique. Each of us has unique needs and preferences. However, there is one important lesson I want to share with you: Always appreciate the cause for your purchase. The pricey designer handbag? Why not? The gorgeous vanity for your bedroom? Try it out. But make sure your purchase is in line with your ideas, feelings, and values. Truly love what you buy!
Thats it for today my Jeanies! I hope this list helps!
